Viroqua Wisconsin: December 2009

Right now it is very quite at my real estate office; I am the only one in. All have left for the Holidays or are doing last minute shopping. I just glanced out the window and see that the last of today's snow has fallen. This morning the reports were for somewhere around 2-4 inches of snow. I think we may have only gotten about 1 inch.

Nearby Viroqua, WI, my husband has made a new little feathered friend, who happens to lives in a grove of pine trees deep in the woods. This little chicken-sized buddy also happens to be a rather tame Ruffed Grouse.  Grouses are sometimes also referred to as partridges and they are not usually friendly. Most Grouse spend their time on the ground in search of food and away from people or prey. If frightened they often burst into flight or freeze statuesque and still, as their feathers are good camouflage.  Grouse are rarely sociable and it is not often you would ever see one close up. Generally they are usually quite elusive and difficult to approach. I have been hearing so much lately about my husband's experiences with this individual bird's behavior, who he has affectionately named Tweety, that I just had to go along for a visit and meet this Little Tweety bird for myself.

I have to say it was amazing, when Tweety saw our pickup truck coming onto the driveway, it enthusiastically turned tail and came running up the road.  It was in hot pursuit of the truck and ran along the side of the vehicle to greet him like an old chum.  Then Tweety hops up onto the truck hood, peering in through the windshield with a look on its face like he might be saying, "Hey where have you been?" 

I took about 20 photos and these are just a few, the cutest being this little fellow taking a walk and trailing behind my husband Trent, just like a little puppy dog. We have no idea how Tweety got so friendly and we certainly hope he does not get taken advantage of by anyone so we are keeping the exact location a well kept secret.
