Vernon County Wisconsin is known for their many historical round barns.
I took this photo of one barn located only 1 mile or so outside of Viroqua. If you are interested in a round barn road tour the link to the map will help, as you will find many more of the remaining round barns on the eastern side of Vernon County than the western side.
It is believed that the reason round barns were built, is because it was more economical to build one, they used less lumber, and were also believed to be more efficient to run and maintain.

Mary, I have seen lots of barns but never a round barn like that before! I love it!
I do not believe I have seen a round barn around here. I will keep my eyes open!
Your Friend in Charlottesville!
I got pictures of barnes on my profile page from around here, I've never heard of a round barn. What is the story behind them?
Hello Todd, thanks for reading and to answer your question, Most in Vernon Cty. were built in the mid 1800's, there are only a few remaining round barns left standing. Most are found on the east side of our county. The link here is from Hillsboro's website. It is very interesting to read about Algie Shivers, a who built most of them back then.
