Viroqua Wisconsin: Scratch N Sniff marketing

Scratch N Sniff marketing

Does anyone remember those stickers back in the 80's that kids loved? They were called Mello-Smello's with scents that ranged from pleasant sweet candy whiffs to completely disgusting stenches. Whenever I enter a truly unpleasant smelling home, I think of those stickers. I can picture how some 8-year old walking into a stinky room might start snickering and squealing loudly about the smell.

The fact is, it's not a laughing matter; the all time number one thing that will cause a home to not sell is stinky smells.  Realtors know it, buyers know it, however sometimes the sellers don't know it, or don't want to know it. Why?  Usually because they are living to close to it and they often do not notice the odor or have become use to it. Just this past week while showing a few homes, one home, I entered took the prize for awful odor.  The buyer and I could not have been in that house for a total of 2 seconds. We both ran for the door holding our breath, I won't be showing that house again.

The most common causes of extreme repulsive odors are, pet odors, smoking, cooking, mold, infestations and body odor. So the question is, do you know if your house smells offensively to others? Odor remedies include deep cleaning, de-cluttering of debris, power-washing basements, steam-cleaning carpets, as well as, vacuuming the duct-work and changing the air filters. As for the showing this week that had me holding my nose, the Realtor was told. IMO right now the only way to sell that particular home is for the owner to completely move out, get a cleaning crew in there and go back on the market after the odor has been eliminated.

Mary

I can relate!

We are in a college town and every now and then I'll open a bedroom door with a semester's worth of dirty clothes stacked chest high with a scattering of fast food leftovers and stale beer bottles mixed in.....LOL

Trey, Yes, college rentals and dirty cloths are a unique combination for bad smells too.
