Viroqua Wisconsin: 2009 Green Resolutions for the office

2009 Green Resolutions for the office

So here's the deal... I decided to work on my 2009 budget and my yearly business plan. With my nose deep into my plan; I had to go retrieve a file from our storage area. Upon entering that room, it hit me. The enormous amount files... They plainly have now outgrown the available storage area and are overflowing from the file cabinets, extra cardboard files boxes and in some cases table tops. They needed, again, to be downsized. Begging the unanswered questions... to shred or to burn... in someones wood stove?

That's when I decided that this would be a good time to figure out a new storage solutions and to green up the office a bit. We will be filing with scanned PDF files saved on Cds starting now and a backup on our intranet site for easy access. Gee that ought to do it. Besides, there is no better time for some Green Resolutions than at the start of a new year. So besides solving our storage problem for me, it also turns out that going to Digital Storage just might also help out our planet a little bit.

May- Kudos for going green!  Every bit helps!  My kids laugh at me all the time because when I work out of my house, which is often, I use the back side of paper, and used paper for my own to do lists.  I am such an eco=geek!

Carol, So true, save buying extra copy paper and use the back side for misc drafts, B&W printouts of the MLS listings or anything.

I really think that there would be a market for that business....one a Virtual Ass't or anyone with a fax machine and computer could do....Call it the Big Green Real Estate Machine....and go for it !

Sally Not sure but, I think that name might be taken by a little mini carpet cleaner??? Are you using PDF storage files, wondering what others are doing?

Counting my blessings that I don't have to maintain as many files as Realtors do, but still wish I could reduce the paper I DO use...my little shredder can't keep up sometimes when I start to clean! =o)

Cheryl, I burn up a shredder each year. Sometimes my handy man takes the files to his farm and burns them in his machine shed wood-stove for heat or starting fires... Going to pdf files on a CD will make life so much better at the end of the paper-trail... thanks for commenting.

My home office has been digital since we opened it in October 2001. This is Southern California where storage space is at a premium, yet one terabyte external hard drives are down to $99. We have five of them. Storage space on the Internet is cheap, too. We have more storage space on our host servers than the amount of the federal bailout -- LOL.

Hi Mary, That is great what you are doing Unfortunately I am still in the stone ages, I have a storage room I rent and schred as much as I can. I probably have 10% on the computer, but to be safe I still print it out:))
